The Faculty of Law, University of Malaya is the first law faculty in Malaysia. The faculty is located in
the capital of city of Kuala Lumpur and has been engaged in legal education and research since 1972. Graduates of the Faculty
of Law are primarily employed in the legal profession and judicial service as well as in various professions from government
administration to commerce, banking, finance, politics and non-governmental organisations.

The Sultan Azlan Shah Lecture Series
The Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture series has been organised by the Faculty
of Law since 1986 in recognition of His Royal Highness’ exceptional contribution to the development of Malaysian law and legal
education as well as his tireless support of the faculty.
The first Sultan Azlan Shah Law Lecture organised by the Faculty of Law of the University of Malaya was
delivered at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on April 23, 1986 by Professor W.R. Cornish of the London School of Economics
entitled "The Colour of Office". Held annually, the lecture series has brought to shore judges and legal
academics from the Commonwealth and other common law countries to share their wisdom and insight into various aspect of law.
The twenty second lecture was delivered by the former Prime Minister of Britain, Mr. Tony Blair entitled "The Role
of the Judge in a Human Rights World" at the Mandarin Oriental in August 2008.

SPEAKER'S PROFILE :
Dr Azzam Tamimi is the director of the Institute of Islamic Political Thought (IIPT), London. He has been a visiting professor
at Kyoto University (2004) and Nagoya University (2006). He has published several books on Islam and democracy, among others,
entitled Rachid Ghannouchi, Democrat within Islamism (Oxford University Press, New York, 2001). He also co-edited a book,
Islam and Secularism in the Middle East (Hurst, London and NY University Press, New York, 2000).
Another book, Hamas, The Unwritten Chapters, was published in October
2006.
He writes and lectures on issues related to Islamic political thought and Middle Eastern politics.
He is a regular commentator on the Arabic satellite channel Al-Jazeera and makes frequent appearances on a number of other
channels, both English and Arabic.
FIRST YEAR STUDENT WINS UNIVERSITIES' ESSAY CHALLENGE 2008/2009
Tan Hon Jian, first year student from the Faculty of Law has flourished the image of the
University of Malaya (UM) by winning the Standard Chartered Bank-MoU Universities' Essay Challenge 2008/2009. His essay entitled
Islamic Banking and its relevance to my personal finances came out as the Best Overall Essay out of 500 entries from University
of Malaya (UM), University of Mara Technology (UiTM) and University of Science Malaysia (USM).
