The English
Department is a legacy from the English Department of the University of Malaya, Singapore, which was established in 1949.
In 1956, when the University of split to become two institutions, i.e. the University of Singapore in Singapore, and the
University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, the English department also became two separate entities, each in their respective universities.
In general, programmes offered at the Department are comparable to those offered in universities in the United Kingdom and
the United State of America. Canonical literature in English that cover the whole period of development of English Literature,
from the Medieval to the Modern, from the foundation for the Bachelor of Arts (English) programme. Due emphasis is also
given to literature in English from other parts of the world such as Africa, India, Australia and USA. Apart from these,
the department also offers courses reflective of current interdisciplinary developments in English Literature, such as ‘Literature
and Popular Culture’, ‘Language of Literature’, and Shakespeare on Screen’.
