:: History

The Department of Indian Studies was established in 1956, under the Faculty of Arts and Social Science in University of Malaya situated in  Lembah Pantai, Kuala Lumpur.  Its main purpose is to conduct academic activities such as teaching, publication, research and consultation services.  In the 50-years history of its development, this department has shown outstanding intellectual achievement and has contributed towards shaping a learned Malaysian. 

 

The establishment of this department is based on several purposes: 

  • To introduce the linguistics, literatury, religious and socio-cultural heritage of the Indian community.

 

  • To show case the historical, socio-political and economic aspects of the Indian community in Malaysia.
