Established in 1975 as part of the South East Asian Studies Programmes, it produced its first batch of graduates
in the 1977/1978 session. In 1987, the programme became the Department of South East Asia.
The department intends to provide a space for the development of teaching and learning at undergraduate
and postgraduate levels while encouraging research among its academic staff.
In terms of teaching, the Department of South East Asian Studies emphasizes studies on the region including
its politics, economy, culture and security.
Using the multi-disciplinary approach of considering issues and application, students in the initial stage
are required to take two Departmental core subjects including South East Asian languages. Students in their final year of
study are required to take the research paper component. Meanwhile, at the advanced level, the department provides Masters
and PhD programmes.
