Speaker: Assoc. Prof. Roxana Waterson, Department of Sociology , National University of Singapore.
Roxana Waterson is an anthropologist and Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology, National University
of Singapore. She has been doing ethnographic research with the Sa’dan Toraja since 1978, and has recently published a book
about them: Paths and Rivers: Sa’dan Toraja Society in Transformation (Leiden: KITLV 2009). She has also made a documentary
film about the decline of the Toraja indigenous religion, When the Sun Rises: A Toraja Priest of the Ancestral Way (2008).
Her original research for her Ph.D. focused on Toraja gender relations. Her other publications include The Living House: An
Anthropology of Architecture in Southeast Asia (4th Edn, Tuttle Publishing, 2009) and Southeast Asian Lives: Personal Narratives
and Historical Experience (Singapore/Athens, Ohio: Singapore University Press/Ohio University Press, 2007). Her current research
interests include social memory, life narratives, visual ethnography, and childhood research.
