Programmes

The Asia-Europe Institute offers a range of International Masters degree programmes tailored to the academic background and career needs of students. These programmes offer a number of unique characteristics that will appeal to students from Asia, Europe and the rest of the world.

AEI offers four International Masters programmes in the following subjects : q     ASEAN Studies (IMAS) q     Information Management (IMIM) q     Regional Integration (IMRI) q     Small-and-Medium Enterprises (IMSMEs) In addition, the AEI also conducts the Ph.D programme which is research driven.

Partnership 

Each of the International Masters programmes had been established in joint partnership with leading institutions in Asia and Europe. This has resulted in close coordination over all aspects of course design, management, delivery and evaluation, as well as the validation of joint degrees and joint recognition. Our International Masters programmes will be committed to developing new partnerships with leading international universities.

An International Outlook

Few university institutions in Southeast Asia are as truly international as the AEI. We study not only Malaysian or Southeast Asian areas of interest, but those of other countries, many of them in a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective. The student community at the AEI is one of the most internationally diverse in the region, with students from more than 20 countries having already studied in our programmes. This mix encourages a truly global and international approach to intellectual discovery and academic life at the AEI which cannot be matched elsewhere.

Experienced High Quality Staff

Each of the International Masters programmes is taught jointly by the AEI’s academic staff and Visiting Professors, all of whom have global reputations. This ensures that the AEI’s students have the benefit of learning from leading scholars who bring with them outstanding pedagogical practice and research insights. In addition to their teaching duties, Visiting Professors add considerable value through frequent dialogue with the University’s local faculty, the promotion of collaborative research, and other public outreach activities.  

The AEI’s staff and Visiting Professors are regularly sought out as advisers, consultants, and commentators, becoming actively engaged in the practical impact of the subject they teach and research. As a student, you will also benefit from the constant stream of national and international politicians, business leaders, civil servants, and academics who visit the AEI to consult staff and to give lectures.

Helping You Fulfil Your Aims

At postgraduate level, study at the AEI generally takes two forms – taught Masters Programmes based on lectures, seminars and tutorials; and research programmes, where you prepare a thesis based on your research. Taught programmes lead to the award of an International Masters degree; research programmes normally lead to the University of Malaya degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D).

Types of Study 

A Masters degree can serve different purposes and offers many benefits. You can study subject in depth which you have taken and enjoyed at degree level and extend your analytical and critical capabilities. Alternatively, a Masters Degree programme could serve as a conversion course from your degree subject, so that you can acquire a different set of skills or knowledge at a much higher level. A Masters degree can also act as research training to lay the foundations for more advanced work in a specialized field.

Many of the programmes we offer blend practical experience with rigorous academic analysis so as to broaden the knowledge of practitioners in certain fields. 

On the International Masters programmes, students are assessed by a combination of coursework assignments associated with each taught course, including examinations, long essays, reports, oral presentations, and a project paper.

Supporting Your Studies

The AEI has a first class specialized Resource and Documentation Centre which carries all the reference materials on your reading list and provides resources needed for the programmes of study. It also offers access to an increasing range of full-text electronic information resources such as newspapers, journals, and useful websites. In addition, all students have access to the Main Library of the University of Malaya which houses the largest collection of books and journals in the country. AEI also provides a computer room with study spaces and IT workstations, laptop points, wireless access and open spaces for group study. As a new student, you will be given a full tour of all the library facilities.

International Masters in ASEAN Studies (IMAS)

Aims and Objectives

The course aims to critically assess the significance of ASEAN as a regional project in terms of theoretical, conceptual, and empirical debates from a range of social science discipline. On completion of this programme, students should have:

q Arrived at an informed understanding of the need for concept in understanding ASEAN and explored these concepts in some detail.

q Acquired knowledge of the context, institutional framework, issue agenda, and governance mechanisms of ASEAN and interpreted several major issues associated with its contemporary development in some detail.

q Compared and evaluated ASEAN in the context of other regional and global developments.

q Developed key analytical, interpretative, practitioner, oral and written presentation skills.

Structure

The programme requires students to undertake a total of 13 academic courses, an internship and write a project paper, amounting to a total of 48 credits. The requirements are categorized in the following modules:

Target Students

This programme is designed for students for whom an MA will be a prelude to careers in fields related to business, international, regional, government and non-governmental organizations, or any career where advanced knowledge of ASEAN, regional integration and globalization coupled with an advanced capacity to communicate effectively will be an advantage. It will appeal particularly to those with an interest in historical, cultural, political, and economic aspects of regional integration.

International Masters in Information Management (IMIM) 

Description Given the gaps in information and knowledge both within and between countries, especially between Asia and Europe, this programme will promote local and global sharing of new information and communication technologies much needed in the 21st century. The impact of the New Economy on organizational structures, management, and development processes requires a strong grounding in economics of information and organizational systems that promote information sharing. This Postgraduate programme is designed to offer breadth of content, intellectual depth, and rigour complemented with attention to a wide range of applications and case studies. It will be of relevance to business managers as well as those concerned with organizational development, internet, and new media training, e-ecommerce, also research analysts and others. This International Masters programme runs for 10 months, full-time, commencing in September.

Aims and Objectives

The increasing globalisation of business, the expansion of information technology (IT) and competition for markets has meant that participation in the business word required expertise of the knowledge economy (k-economy). Skills that have been identified for the new economy transcend many disciplines such as computing, economics, and organizational studies. Popular subjects associated with the K-Economy include fields such as management, economics, and marketing.

This particular course is designed by AEI to develop this expertise by equipping students with specialist knowledge of the link between ICT, and K-Economy and the business environment in Asia and Europe. Such skills are invaluable to small-scale enterprises, multinational corporations, and policy makers in the region to ensure competitive edge and success in a global market.

International Masters in Regional Integration (IMRI)

Description This International Masters programme in Regional Integration examines the origins and consequences (for nation states as well as firms and citizens) of efforts and strategies to redraw boundaries of authority at the regional level in the context of intensified globalization. Using an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, the programme focuses on explanations of the intensity and type of authority shift to regional institutions across issues and across regions. It places particular emphasis on understanding the relationship between regional integration and processes of economic globalization, the development of new forms of governance, and the reconfiguration of the state.

Aims and Objective

The course aims to critically assess the significance of regional integration in terms of theoretical, conceptual, and empirical debates from a range of social science disciplines. On completion of this programme, students should have:

q Arrived at an informed understanding of how regional integration and globalization are conceptualized and theorized.

q Interpreted current processes associated with regional integration, including national development, economic interdependence, and globalization, the emergence of new forms of governance, the structural context in which these take place and their political, economic, legal, and social consequences.

q Developed key analytical, interpretative, practitioner, oral and written presentation skills.

The programme requires students to undertake a total of 13 academic courses, an internship and write a project paper, amounting to a total of 48 credits. The requirements are categorized in the following modules:

This programme is designed for students for whom an MA will be a prelude to careers in fields related to business, international, regional, government and non-governmental organizations, as well as teaching, journalism or any career where advanced knowledge of regional integration and globalization coupled with an advanced capacity to communicate effectively will be an advantage. It will appeal particularly to those with an interest in the economic, political, legal, and social issues that arise from intensified regional integration on a worldwide scale.

International Masters in Small-and-Medium Enterprises (IMSMEs)

Description This International Masters programme in Small and Medium Enterprise is designed for students who wish to enhance the development of entrepreneurial skills and managerial capacity in order to ensure the viability and continuity of SMEs over time. The focus of the programme is to provide an understanding of the strength of both Asian and European social and economic contexts in which SMEs operate, as well as the methodologies, technicalities and tools that allow a better structured decisional process and a more conscious management of the business. The intercultural setting of the programme will also enhance the ability of prospective managers and government executives to strengthen economic cooperation between Europe and Asia.

Aims and Objective

The course aims to critically assess the significance of information management in organizations, and in the context of a changing global economy. On completion of this programme, students should have:

q Acquired the methodologies and managerial tools created or adapted for SMEs reality and, through field project, verified the operational validity of those methodologies and tools.

q Developed capabilities and aptitudes coherent with the organizational context of SMEs, less formal but more creative, flexible and light.

q Analysed the strengths and weaknesses of family business, the cultural and social context in which they operate and the economic relationships with other firms, and produced outputs of immediate use for the participants as well as for the targeted companies.

q Developed key analytical, interpretative, practitioner, oral and written presentation skills.
