Director's Welcoming Address

W
elcome to the Institute of Principalship Studies, University of Malaya. It is located in the City Campus of the University of Malaya, in the vicinity of the administrative and commercial centre of Kuala Lumpur. The lush greenery in its surroundings, makes it an attractive place to study. The Institute strives to be a one stop center for the principalship preparation, in-service professional development programmes as well as a research center in instructional leadership, focusing on school effectiveness and improvement. A majority of our students are teachers with more than five years experience, identified by the Ministry and given study leave to pursue their masters. We believe that deeply committed school leaders, skilled as instructional leaders are the pillars of successful schools, and the training of principals is best through experiential learning. Hence, while pursuing their degrees, students of the Institute are actively running the activities of the Institute, including weekly graduate seminars, an annual conference and various other activities. To date the Institute has produced more than 400 Master in Principalship graduates, many of whom are holding various positions of influence in schools and the education sector.

The Institute is always striving to be more creative in ways we prepare students to be instructional leaders as well as skilled in student development, school based curriculum development and building the school as a learning community. We strive to forge relationship with schools through the National Congress of Secondary School Principals of Malaysia in an effort to build relationships between the University and the school sector to facilitate desirable changes both in individual schools as well as the school community. To help realize our mission of becoming leading national research centre in school effectiveness and improvement, and principalship studies, we seek to strengthen our links and collaboration with other national and overseas institutions through joint research projects.
