UM Survey Camp

INTRODUCTION:

Survey camp is a basic necessity for civil engineering students to understand how an engineering plan is created. Within this 2 week period, students will be given tasks like producing plan details of a particular area and using these information for designing and planning purposes. During this process students have the chance to use the latest technology such as GPS satellite, the 'Total Station' equipment as well as software used in industrial sector.

The training shall start intensively where students will gather data during the day and process as well as plot the data at night. Work plan for the day must be done at night whereby all errors and defeciencies that have been identified will be corrected the next day. Students will be assisted by lecturers so that work result is as good as or better than those in the current industrial sector.

This hand-out provides information on the Engineering Survey Camp for students studying for the Bachelor of Civil Engineering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Malaya. The practical works bring together and introduce students to different methods of surveying. The survey camp is an excellent learning experience for students. Students will have the opportunity to learn new concepts that will help them in later courses.

The survey camp normally takes place at the end of the first year. The duration of the survey camp is two weeks and comprises of fieldwork, computations, analysis and presentation.

This camp is often the first opportunity for students to work outside and to integrate various aspects of engineering disciplines into a project. The main functions of the survey camp are to:

· Enable students to work in real project;

· Enable students to become more familiar with instrumentation;

· Appreciate how different survey methods complement each other; and

· Give students an opportunity to make significant survey decisions.
