Knowledge in survey is absolutely necessary for a civil engineer graduate. Affirming the location, area and details of a particular
project site are basic information required of a civil engineer before planning any construction. In general, a civil engineer
should have a deep understanding and refined knowledge on every aspect of survey engineer.
At lecture and practical level, students are fed theoretical and practical knowledge.
They are exposed to the tools used during the 7 week practical sessions. However this knowledge needs to be followed by the
2 week Survey Camp Program. The Survey Camp Program gives students a chance to apply theory and the practice of tools during
practical sessions in order to perform the actual work later. For 2 weeks students are drilled with survey projects that will
actually be used later on for bridge construction, road works, new housing areas, river renovations and the likes.
Based on years of experience until 1996 when University of Malaya was still in term system, this Survey
Camp program ran smooth. All students generally valued the experience and knowledge gained as well as developed self confidence
to become a civil engineer. Starting year 1997, which is when semester system was applied and years of studies reduced from
4 years to 3 years, this program had to be suspended due to insufficient time. Since years of studies have returned to 4 years,
this is no longer a problem.
